Handmaid's Tale boss reveals real reason why major characters were cut in season 5
"[Bledel's departure] happened certainly early enough that we could change direction. But because – in a good way, because we love Emily so much, and adore working with Alex, we had already made lots of decisions halfway through the season before.
"There was no way she could let us know ahead of time, because we were already building stuff up through the middle of"She let us know as quickly as she could when she made the decision – as she does with all those things. It was her own counsel, and there was no rancour at all. It was a personal decision. We were terribly sorry to see her go, personally, with the work that she does on the show, it's so unbelievable.
