After 44 years of stabbings and scares, christinalefou looks back at the influence (and ludicrous supernatural antics) of Halloween 🎬
Now, this weekend, Curtis’s legendary run as Laurie is finally over with, which promises actual closure for the 13-film franchise. Curtis has appeared in roughly half of those – the sequels, both with and without her, have been of varying quality, to put it politely – but it remains one of the most prolific and influential horror franchises to ever exist. That makesa milestone, one in which the seemingly unrelenting and immortal killer may finally go away for ever.
That is at least marginally where the trouble may come in: Carpenter did not return to direct the 1981 sequel, which wove in the more supernatural elements, at least in part because it was clear that the franchise had legs for future iterations. Although both had their gruesome thrills, neither had quite the snap or novelty of the original. Still, Carpenter and Hill have remained involved at various junctures, Carpenter both on the musical scores and as exec producer later down the line.
Because of a lack of one sole connecting voice – and a tendency in the 80s and 90s to change with horror film fads – there has been exceptionally little continuity in the series over the decades. There has been no attempt to connect many of the stories when new directors come in, and radically different perspectives contradict the ones that came immediately before.
For the latest set of retreads, horror mainstay Blumhouse Productions picked up the intellectual property for the series and David Gordon Green took on the duties of– adding a more grounded, trauma-based realism to proceedings, and doing away with some of the more ludicrous elements of previous versions of the films. .
Along with her daughters, Laurie is locked in a seemingly never-ending struggle with the masked killer, which fixes them in a good-versus-evil battle, but mixes in shades of real sadness, violence and a knowingness about mental health concerns and Myers’ chequered history in an institution.
