He's desperate to keep the gym running
Former world champion boxer Jawaid Khaliq says he's fighting to find a new venue for his gym over uncertainty cast by the charity which sub-lets the lease to him. Mr Khaliq, who has been running boxing classes at the Sycamore Millennium Centre in St Ann’s for years, works with some of the most deprived communities across the city, for which he was awarded an MBE.
"All the kids and the people that come here are going to be lost without a place to go to. We get 30 or 40 kids and 20, 30, 40 adults a day coming here. They learn boxing, get off the streets and improve their health and mental health. I think it is going to be devastating for us if we have to leave and we can't find another place."
"We can't get the funding without getting a lease, we can't get help without securing a venue. It is crazy, it seems like we have been fobbed off."
