One eyewitness told the Reuters news agency on Saturday: “Roads leading to Evin prison have been closed to traffic. There are lots of ambulances here. Still, we can hear gunshots.” “This fire was caused by a fight between some prisoners in a sewing workshop,” said Tehran governor Mohsen Mansouri. “The workshop was set up to create jobs” for prisoners, he said.
British-Iranian dual nationals Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori were both held at Evin prison for several years on spying charges, which they denied, before their release earlier this year.
