The first election for the new role is due to be held in May
Candidates to be the first ever East Midlands Mayor say the government needs to "pull its finger out" to avoid elections for the new role being delayed. The mayor will be in charge of a brand new East Midlands Combined Authority, an organisation covering Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire that will be given significant powers by government in areas such as transport and housing.
He said: "There will come a point where it is too late if the bill doesn't pass. We've had that commitment from ministers, I know they're doing everything they can do. "I think it could be a good thing with the right person in the role, but it is very much a government-led thing they're pushing out." The Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill is currently being considered by the House of Lords, but it still needs to clear two hurdles in that chamber before amendments are considered and royal assent is given.
