The UK Government launched “the most significant assault on human rights protections in decades” last year, a leading rights organisation has claimed 🔴 The Rwanda policy and limits on protesting were criticised in the new report

Yasmine Ahmed, UK director at Human Rights Watch, said: “In 2022, we saw the most significant assault on human rights protections in the UK in decades. From your right to protest to your ability to hold institutions to account, fundamental and hard-won rights are being systematically dismantled.

“Despite heralding itself as playing a ‘leading role in defending democracy and freedom across the world,’ the UK Government has taken a sledgehammer to fundamental international commitments. “In one breath the British government is denouncing Russia for violating international law and in the next it’s actively flouting and undermining its own international commitments.”

Allan Hogarth, Amnesty International UK’s Head of Advocacy and Programmes, said the report “rightly shows that human rights are under sustained attack in the UK. “The Government’s recent actions are undermining human rights in this country – from criminalising people for seeking asylum in the UK, the introduction of draconian anti-protest laws – with the prospect of more to come – and ongoing threats to rip up the landmark Human Rights Act,” he told“The Government is also making a mockery of the rule of law with plans to deny victims their right to justice through a very damaging and ill-conceived Northern Ireland Troubles Bill.
