The Government has hit its flagship target of recruiting 20,000 new police officers by the end of March despite a major shortfall at theToday, the Home Office released final figures which confirm police forces have pulled off a remarkable turnaround in the final three months before the deadline, showing the total number of officers added is 20,951.. The country’s largest force was set a target of recruiting 4,557 officers and had a tally of 3,468 by the end of March.

However, the Government has made up the shortfall by allowing other forces to add extra officers beyond the quota that was originally agreed.The former Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the recruitment drive in 2019 in an attempt to reverse a decade of cuts to police officer numbers under previous Conservative governments.
