Gareth Jones was treating patients at Glasgow Royal Infirmary up until June 2021, when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and, as a result of gruelling treatment, was unable to carry on working.
A surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary was devastated after being unable to work after a 31-year career, when he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.
But, despite his knowledge and expertise, the 56-year-old, who lives in Cambuslang, admitted "nothing really helps you when you’ve got incurable cancer." "I knew something was wrong because I also had some abdominal pains, was fatigued and generally not well. He is now on lifelong medication - including injections to stop the production of hormones - and has to go for a dreaded blood test once a month.
"Every month, I have anxiety about getting blood taken and then waiting for the results. You are on tenterhooks and it’s difficult. Not being able to work impacted Gareth's mental health and he fell into depression and anxiety, which he sought help for.
