Westminster’s Home Affairs Committee said a pilot should proceed, with joint funding from both of Scotland's governments

Figures published last week showed that 1,051 people died of drug misuse in Scotland in 2022, the second year in a row that the toll has fallen after a series of record highs.

The committee’s report said the UK Government should create a “legislative pathway” under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 that would enable such a facility to operate legally. The report also recommended that the Home Office and Department of Health set up a “national drug checking service” in England to enable people to submit drug samples by post anonymously, so they know the content of what they are taking.
