German FA abstain from voting in FIFA presidential race as they demand a ‘clearer commitment to human rights’
The German football association has abstained from nominating a candidate for the FIFA presidency in protest of Gianni Infantino running unopposed.
Elections will take place on March 16, 2023 in Rwanda’s capital of Kigali but they will be a formality after Infantino snapped up support from South America, Asia and Oceania. “Many associations have already signalled their support for the incumbent President Gianni Infantino,” said president Bernd Neuendorf.“Nevertheless, with this decision we want to express that we would have liked FIFA to have made a clearer commitment to human rights and a greater commitment to humanitarian issues.”
