Imarn Ayton, the founder of the Black Reformist Movement, recollects marching alongside John Boyega and Madonna at the Black Lives Matter protests, and discusses what still needs to change in the UK in order to effectively combat racism today.
During those first tumultuous weeks, I recognised the potential for the BLM movement to transform our society, but I had no clue about the obstacles that it would face in the coming year. To my mind, the golden thread that runs through the BLM movement is equality and justice for Black people, although it comprises many different ideologies.
That is just one of many reasons why I decided to found the BRM in July. BRM works collaboratively with institutions to teach people about the various forms of racism: covert, overt, and, perhaps most importantly, systemic. While the tragic death of George Floyd has led to more productive conversations around race generally, there is still a lot of work to be done.
While launching Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programmes is vital, it’s no panacea for racial injustice. Institutions must first confront the systemic racism within them – and within society as a whole – head-on, before collating data and auditing their practices. Transparency around our racial history and current biased policies is key.
