Eamon Fox and Gary Convie were killed in a UVF gun attack in 1994

UVF chief turned supergrass Gary Haggarty today revealed two catholic workmen shot dead in May 1994 were murdered due to “pure sectarianism”.

Gary Haggarty - who joined the UVF in 1991 and was recruited by Special Branch two years later - provided details about the double murder and implicated north Belfast man James Smyth as the gunman. Haggarty was brought into the witness box of a packed Court 12 at Belfast Crown Court amid a heavy security presence. After swearing on the Bible to tell the truth, the 51-year old former second in command of the third battalion of the Belfast Brigade of the UVF based in Tiger’s Bay recalled the events both leading to and after the double murder.

Haggarty told the non-jury trial “the next thing Mark Haddock asked me to do in relation to the attack on Mr Convie and Mr Fox was to supervise the test firing of the weapon”. Details about Smyth’s getaway were also discussed then Haggarty said he then took Smyth to the children’s playground, showed him where the hole in the fence was then left him there.

He said he and several others including Smyth met then in a north Belfast pub for a de-briefing about the double shooting, and when asked how Smyth was, Haggarty said “he was excited” about what had happened but was “unhappy he couldn’t get the guy in the back”.
