Alexa Chung recently declared one of Anna October’s dresses as “the best in the world”.
The dress, which comes in a mini and maxi length, along with an array of colours, is now part of October’s core collection. “I’m not designing trendy, seasonal things,” she explains. “I’m obsessed with the quality [of my pieces] and the fit. I’m designing things that last for years.”
While October uses deadstock fabrics in her collections, the designer shies away from calling her brand sustainable, instead preferring the term ethical. “We do local sourcing and production in Ukraine,” she says. “I like to support local craftsmanship. We have a community of babushkas [old women or grandmothers] that do all the handwork [in the collections].”
Of course, Ukraine has undergone unthinkable upheaval since the Russian invasion began in February 2022. October, who saw rockets from her window in Kyiv on the first morning of the war, washer home to Paris. While she temporarily moved her brand’s studio to western Ukraine at the start of the war, the majority of her team are now back in the capital, where October now travels to to make each collection.
For October, a former LVMH Prize semi-finalist, it’s more important than ever for those outside of Ukraine to support the country and its creatives. “I want to make people remember that this has happened, and it’s not getting any better,” she says.
