Andrew Burfield thought he was 'smarter than the average bear'. He wasn't
On Friday April 22, 2022, Andrew Burfield made a 999 call to Lancashire Police. Members of his girlfriend’s family were at his front door, shouting and threatening.Just hours earlier, he had murdered Katie Kenyon and buried her in a grave he had dug the night before, in dense woodland in Gisburn Forest.
Sarah said: “When the messages were received that afternoon we knew immediately that something was not right. Katie would never have left her children like that and there was all sorts going through our heads. We went out looking for her almost straight away and we sensed then that Burfield was behind it.”
A sister’s instinct Jenny Kenyon-Holden could not settle. In a family statement, the sisters later said: “We knew that he was not good for Katie but we never thought he would be able to do something so horrific to her.” I reported her missing last night as I said I would, I’ve given the police all Katie’s things she posted…This is Worrying Enough without you adding to it, the police searched my house to last night so I think we should leave it down to them now….
Throughout the journey, Katie’s phone bounced off masts along the route towards and away from the Forest of Bowland. Burfield’s remained at home, in what investigators believe was an attempt by him to create an alibi. Saved in Burfield’s iCloud Notes app was a string of draft messages, purporting to be from Katie. The messages, to her children, her mum and to Burfield himself, matched, virtually verbatim, the messages received on April 22 - but could not have been drafted any later than April 4.
Katie’s fears Messages between Burfield and Katie were littered with heart emojis and declarations of love. Burfield promised Katie that on April 22 she would have a fresh start - describing the day as ‘Earth Day.’ Careful planning Officers looked at Burfield’s movements on April 21, the day before Katie disappeared. They discovered he had visited his parent’s house to borrow a spade and a step ladder, before driving to Gisburn Forest. As he arrived in the Forest of Bowland, his phone was disconnected from the network, and only switched on an hour and a half later. When quizzed, Burfield told officers he had gone to the forest on a recce, as he planned to take Katie on a picnic the following day.
However one piece of vital evidence emerged. A householder, living in Hillingdon Road, Burnley, recalled Burfield had been doing some building work on Saturday April 23 and had casually asked what day the bins were emptied. In panic, the killer claimed he had dug a shallow grave and buried Katie, to keep the animals from her, while he drove home to sort the kids out. He planned to return to the forest and kill himself, he said.

DCI Davies said: “We got to a point where we were not certain she was there because of the lie of the land. We said, maybe he needs to help us to identify where Katie is, for dignity for her and closure for the family.
"It was the news that none of us wanted to hear and to make it worse at that stage the police still did not know where Katie was. We simply could not face telling her children, DCI Davies had to do that for us. I cannot describe to anyone what that was like. Awaiting trial Despite admitting he had killed Katie, Burfield maintained it was an accident and said he buried Katie in a spur-of-the moment decision. However the police and Crown Prosecution would not accept this. They believed Burfield had murdered Katie in a planned and premeditated attack, digging the grave on April 21, and taking careful steps to cover his tracks and concoct an implausible story to minimise his crime.
“The messages between you reveal how you deceived her, that you loved her whilst at the same time manipulating her. You created a debt for £6000, which she denied, and then used it to scare her with the loss of her home, whilst at the same time you pretended to help her.
