'His gallantry and determination deserve the highest praise'
A former Northamptonshire goalkeeper who ran through "hail of gunfire" in WW1 won a medal for his bravery. As part of a running series, the Irthlingborough Historical Society has kindly provided Northants Live with biographies of local soldiers.
Remembrance Sunday has its origins in Armistice Day, which was dedicated in Great Britain on November 11, 1919, to acknowledge the anniversary of the peace agreement that ended World War I.One of the millions involved in that conflict, Albert E Bennett - known as Jack - won the distinguished Conduct Medal and Bar for his actions in 1917.
"When most of his section were wounded, himself included, he took over the men around him and continued bombing until dusk. His gallantry and determination deserve the highest praise."
