New Labour too had its share of Ministers of State who beavered away with little high-profile recognition. Kevin Brennan as Skills Minister, Angela Eagle at Pensions, Vernon Coaker as Policing Minister, David Hanson as Counter-Terrorism Minister, all got on with the job away from the limelight. And while many former ministers have recently become chairs of select committees, there’s a strong case for turning that career path on its head. Chairs of select committees, who work cross-party and know a department inside out, make excellent ministers.
