FA data shows 41 per cent of secondary schools offer equal access to football for girls within PE lessons
offer equal access to football for girls within PE lessons, the latest available statistics from the Football Association show, revealing a yawning chasm between the sexes despite the women’s success at elite level.
While some progress is being made – with 71 per cent of primary schools having a girls’ or mixed team this year compared to 61 per cent in 2022 – teachers and education leaders say more needs to be done by the Government to stick to their vow to improve access to football for girls in schools. Danielle Richards, a former QPR player and education manager at Fulham who now is now a head of year at Coombe Boys School in south-west London, said the FA figures highlighting the disparity between football offered to girls and boys were “disappointing”.“I work in an all-boys school now, but I’ve got nieces now and they should have the same opportunities as the boys do.
“When we filmed it, women’s football wasn’t very big. Fulham were the only real professional team in the UK,” she said. Bridget Phillipson MP, Labour’s shadow Education Secretary, has called for the Prime Minister to do more.: “A year on from the Lionesses’ magnificent victory in the Euros, girls are still not getting opportunities to play our national game in school – in part due to the legacy of cuts to school sport under the Conservatives.
“Schools will want to do everything possible to provide those opportunities for their pupils, although they are under enormous pressure as a result of a timetable full of different expectations from the Government,” she said. “And where are you going to get, I guess, the enthusiasm to do it? Uless you’ve been trained to coach football there is still a confidence level.
“My father was the first barrier. Why would he want to buy football boots for his daughter when he never had to buy them for his sons? And then playing opportunities, not there,” she said. She added: “I think we need to break the barriers down. Kids should be allowed to try any sport they want regardless of gender.”
Whereas in secondary schools many departments have separate PE lessons for boys and girls creating a “structural barrier to equal access”.
