Swarms of flying ants have been spotted buzzing around various cities and countrysides in the UK recently
Anyone who has been trekking the countryside or hanging out their washing recently might have been chased back inside by a swarm of flying insects - but why is this? It turns out there is a reason for these buzzing critters circling the UK - as there is such a thing called 'flying ant day'.
One X user was on their daily walk in the country and posted: "#FromMyWalk yesterday - Crathie - Prince Albert's Pyramid; Balmoral from Prince Leopold's Cairn. The stones of the cairns and pyramids in the sun were covered with flying ants." One spotted some flying ants resting on their car, writing: "Out on the river at lunchtime for a quick look. Got back to the car and found it covered in flying ants. It's been a while since I have seen so many."
"Following a wet start to the spring this year, followed by the very warm weather we've been experiencing, the conditions are ripe for bumper swarms. Humidity plays a crucial role in the life cycle of ants, particularly during the nuptial flight, keeping their wings and bodies moist as they mate on the wing.
