Two health experts have picked out their top five yoga poses for reducing bloating
Yoga has many health benefits, from improving flexibility, strength and your mental health and many now use it to reduce bloating. Taking to your yoga mat and stretching has been shown to aid digestion and has even been found to improve period pain and bloating.
Speaking to Marie Curie, two experts have picked out the best positions to ease bloating and explain the benefits of the exercises, which can be done in minutes. Dietitian Sophie Medlin, who specialises in gut health, says: "Yoga can give both short-term and longer-term relief from bloating. A regular practice will mean that you will feel more confident with the poses and your form is likely to improve over time, while stomach-stimulating poses can ease bloating immediately.
Senior yoga and breathwork teacher and founder of Yoga Collective London Laura Pearce, adds: "There are certainly ways in which yoga can relieve trapped wind, menstrual symptoms, and some other causes of bloating." Together, the pair have created a yoga routine ideal for getting rid of stomach bloating, whether "it's period bloat or food-related swelling". Medlin explains: "Certain yoga poses help gas move through the digestive tract more efficiently and reduce that feeling of built-up air" which can alleviate bloating."
