First-time buyer transforms 'tired' 1930s south Manchester house into stylish dream home
When buying your first home there are many things to consider, from your budget and deposit to your desired house type and size. But for those who are wanting to work their way up the property ladder, location is often one of the most important factors.
"At that time, we had no idea about Manchester in general. We didn't know which areas to look at or where we wanted to live. Luckily we were in a fortuitous position where we had saved a deposit, but house prices were quickly going up so we knew we needed to act fast. “Because this was our first home, it was a bit of a journey for us to explore what was important to us and what we actually wanted, but the end of the day, it was location, location, location."
"We didn’t have many requirements for the house itself; it was just what was available within our budget. We thought a three-bed would be ideal and then we knew we wanted to get a dog so having some outdoor space was quite important to us." "We had spent the entire summer looking for a place to buy and we kept being outbid or didn't like them. We told ourselves that if we were unsuccessful by the deadline, we'd just need to look at renting somewhere and then buy later down the line.
"It had a new kitchen but with an old lean-to attached to it where a lot of the appliances were which wasn't ideal. But because we ended up buying it at the top end of our budget, we were definitely not in the position to rip it all out right away. "We didn't want to do too many things in terms of design and cosmetics because we knew that might make other bits around the house obsolete.
"We didn't have a background in architecture or anything and we didn’t necessarily know a lot about houses when we bought it. We are also not DIY people although it gives us great pleasure and we love seeing the results, we wanted to get it done right "We put these lovely doors in the back so when it's nice and sunny we just open them up and can go in and out all day. When we’re hosting friends and family it is so nice to have a space where people actually want to spend time in.
"We have done a bit of DIY on our home, the most recent addition is panelling. We turned the spare bedroom into an office so we did some panelling in there and also built in a bookcase. "At the top end of the house facing onto the street is our living room space where we normally spend our evenings, then in the middle we've got the dining area and at the end is the kitchen with an island. You can access the garden from the doors leading out from the kitchen.
Speaking about their future plans for their home, Anna said: "We're quite happy with the current layout. We don’t feel like we need anything else now that we've done the extension. The third bedroom definitely needs some TLC so we're just trying to figure out the best use for it.
