Stunning first for Lincolnshire! 🎈 Frampton Marsh welcomes UK's rarest chicks - the black-winged stilts. 🐣
In an historic first for Lincolnshire, four extremely rare black-winged stilt chicks have hatched at Frampton Marsh.
First arriving on May 1, two more joined later that day – with the birds thought to be a relatively young pair with an additional male in tow.The black-winged stilt chick is one of the UK’s rarest breeding birds, having formerly been unique visitors from southern Europe before they began to emerge in greater numbers in this country.
John Badley, senior site manager at RSPB Frampton Marsh, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome these captivating birds, and to have the honour of seeing the first black-winged stilt chicks ever to hatch in Lincolnshire. A nest was made within a fenced off protective zone at Frampton Marsh, increasing the chances of species to raise their young. They first bred in the UK at a sewage farm in Nottingham way back in 1945, and on just three more occasions until 2005.
