EXCLUSIVE: The Fire Brigades Union is consulting with its members ahead of a ballot on industrial action which could lead to a strike next year.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service cannot be reformed "on the cheap" as firefighters consider strike action, a union chief has warned.
Speaking to the Record, Brown said the emergency service was struggling to recruit and retain younger staff while experienced firefighters were demoralised by budget cuts. "The cuts are so deep because of routine and chronic underfunding that we've had to take 10 appliances off - that equates to 200 firefighter jobs.
"Society doesn't work that way anymore," he added. "The RDS system sees around 150 pumps unavailable on a daily basis because they can't man them.
