Final chance to get policing right, says London Mayor Sadiq Khan responds to the Metropolitan Police’s new London Plan
Stop and search must be mindful that policing is by consent, the mayor said on tackling racism in the Met police was “the last chance” to get it right.
Responding to today’s report, Khan reaffirmed his support for Sir Mark’s reforms but warned that change must now come “once and for all.”: “I’ve got to be frank, I’ve spent my younger life experiencing some of the consequences of the issues that you and I know very well. “But also you’ve got a new Met leadership team who understand the importance of changing cultures, systems, and processes, but at the same time getting the basic core policing functions right.”
Khan said: “You could be somebody who’s convicted of a serious offence and not automatically dismissed. For some reason the government’s dithering and delaying bringing about the change in legislation and regulation to ensure that we get the right people joining the police service and we can get rid of the bad people.
