Fears that bird flu could mutate to become infectious between humans and spark a fresh pandemic have been fuelled by a recent outbreak of the virus among mink in Spain. 🔴janemerrick23 + DavidParsely50
At present,– there has been only one case in the UK, of a man who contracted the virus after coming into close contact with infected poultry. Other cases have resulted from close contact with birds, and there is no evidence that it can spread easily between humans.
The UKHSA has launched a technical group to monitor cases among humans and any genetic signs that the virus is mutating to become more infectious among people. The risk assessment says: “The rapid and consistent acquisition of the PB2 mutation in mammals may imply this virus has a propensity to cause zoonotic infections and further assessment should be made of the properties of this mutation.
Existing variants of avian flu in humans that have been directly infected from birds have a much higher mortality rate than covid, of between 20 and 40 per cent, Prof Bell said.
