Yuki Tsunoda has converted personal growth into standout performances in 2023, but his longterm future in F1 is hard to perceive.
“I’ve been able to put it together more, much more than the last two years, over a whole weekend,” Tsunoda says. “I feel like I’m leading the team much more than the last two years, to help them a lot to head in the same direction. It’s a good environment.”Tsunoda puts his newfound consistency partly down to improved preparations. The foundations were laid before the season started, when he linked up with Daniel Ricciardo’s former trainer, Michael Italiano.
Tsunoda feels that a change in thought process has helped him better maintain concentration. “Even if the race is bad, you find some things to learn for the future and things to help you improve for next time. That kind of thinking gives races better progress and better ideas to improve.” “Now I felt like I had to perform well and develop as a kind of replacement for Pierre, to help them to develop the car. I think so far, it’s been good.”Ricciardo’s hand injury at the Dutch Grand Prix opened the door for Liam Lawson’s F1 debut and left Red Bull with a driver quandary.
How the situation will play out really comes down to what Red Bull sees as being the future prospects for all three drivers. Ricciardo is 34, but showed signs of his old self in his simulator work and private test with Red Bull ahead of getting the AlphaTauri seat, and is bidding for a long-term return to the senior team. Lawson is only 21, and has a high development ceiling, even if he’s not racing in F1 full-time next year.
