Fan stopped entering stadium with pair of binoculars after security spots alcohol concealed inside FIFAWorldCup
In a video clip, the fan wearing a Mexico shirt is put through a thorough search by security guards who were alerted to the pair of binoculars, which is not usually an item spectator’s pack for a day out at the football. The suspicions from the security team were validated when one of the guards unscrewed the eye lenses to reveal a tube that liquid can be sucked out of.
What type of alcohol was inside the binoculars is anyone’s guess but considering Qatar’s strict stance on alcohol consumption, it’s likely that it wasn’t a soft drink. FIFA initially confirmed ticket holders would be allowed to consume alcohol within the stadium perimeter both before and after games.A FIFA statement read: “Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters.
The decision caused uproar among fans who had planned to have a beer or two whilst taking in the World Cup. Alcohol can be consumed in Qatar, however there is a zero tolerance approach to drinking in public while public drunkenness is forbidden.
