“Autism had been on my radar, but I hadn’t pursued it because Maple was generally a lovely student who just wanted to make everyone happy,” Barrett says. “I was left in shock after the phone call.”
Maple was finally diagnosed with autism by a private consultant in early 2021 and having completed GCSEs online, is now pursuing a gaming development course at college, and is being given one-to-one support. In her appointments with families, Fisher has seen children at the end of their tether, dealing with trauma, anxiety and guilt. She says parents are surviving in a constant state of burnout, broken by the fight to get their children’s needs met.
“He had an individual education plan that gave him a little bit of help, but not enough,” Catherine tells. “I had to fight for him to get an EHCP. I hoped it would give him more help. It did help some in years five and six, but there was no help whatsoever for his transition into secondary school.”
