Improvised explosives, a machine pistol and ammunition have been found in a police operation in Derry on Friday, the PSNI has said.The find follows the discovery of a kilogram of plastic explosives, two grenades, two handguns, ammo and cash in a series of searches in the Creggan area on Thursday.

On Friday evening, police announced a security alert was underway in the Stewarts Terrace area of Rosemount.Speaking late on Friday night, PSNI Derry City and Strabane Superintendent William Calderwood said: "Shortly after 12.30pm this afternoon, Friday 8th September, officers from the Terrorism Investigation Unit conducted a search of a house in the area.

"A large group of people gathered in the area from around 6pm and threw a number of items at officers, including petrol bombs and masonry. Thankfully, there have been no reports of any officers injured."
