All for Rio is returning on Sunday, September 10 and you can get involved by going to Ribchester to support Tommy Spurr and his family
Ribchester’s Red Day for Rio returns this weekend to support four-year-old Rio Spurr, son of former Blackburn Rovers defender Tommy Spurr.
Rio was diagnosed with a rare kidney cancer in 2022 and has been through chemotherapy and radiotherapy to reach a point where he is currently cancer-free. Fundraising is continuing for Rio as the chances of his cancer returning are one in two, and further treatment, not available on the NHS, will cost up to £1million.
As a result, a number of Spurr's former teammates from Rovers and Preston North End will be taking on a selection of Ribchester Rovers players on Sunday, September 10 at 2pm on Ribchester Park, admission is free. After raising £20,000 at the inaugural event last September, Spurr is hoping to raise more vital funds.
"We’ve been told that Rio’s chances, if he does have a relapse, will drop to 10 per cent, which explains the reason why we’re trying to raise funds to be prepared for if that does happen," he explained. "Anyone in our position would do the same if it was their little boy or little girl. It’s just unbearable to think about.
