UK airspace remained open despite the technical fault, but the failure meant that air traffic controllers could not rely on automatic route planning when directing aircraft
Instead, flight plans had to be “processed manually” by air traffic controllers, “which cannot be done at the same volume, hence the requirement for traffic flow restrictions,” NATS explained.
Former air traffic controller Michele Robson suggested the actual fault may have occurred hours earlier, as the system usually has “enough data for four hours” before emergency measures have to be put in place. As of Monday afternoon, more than 230 departures and 270 arrivals at UK airports had been cancelled due to the chaos, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium – with hundreds more cancellations possible in the hours and days ahead due to the ripple effects of the chaos.
