The government has been slammed as the crisis worsens
Schools, hospitals and a theatre in Greater Manchester have been identified as having dangerous crumbling concrete. Councils and social housing providers across the region are checking their estates for signs of the problem.
But Sir Keir told the House of Commons: "The truth is this crisis is the inevitable result of 13 years of cutting corners, botched jobs, sticking-plaster politics. Altrincham College, Trafford No further details have been released about Altrincham College, aside from the fact it has an RAAC issue. Images do however appear to show work to a roof being carried out.
"With support from the Manchester Diocesan Board of Education and our building consultants, we are already formulating plans to mitigate the risks of the RAAC panels in the hall roof so that the space can be reopened safely, and we are in regular contact with the DfE about our proposals. It was something head Ms Lightbown was aware of, with mitigations in place at the school. But the urgent instructions from the DfE - for full or partial closures of affected schools - took everyone by surprise.
Headteacher Clare Doodson and chair of governors Phil Ashcroft initially said the school would aim to open on September 7, but some classrooms would need scaffolding in place temporarily. Now families have been told that it will be Monday at the earliest when the school reopens, providing all work is completed and signed off by the DfE.
However, they said as a result of updated government guidance they would remain closed while 'further investigations' are carried out.Bosses at two Greater Manchester hospitals with dangerous crumbling concrete have assured that 'patient and staff safety is paramount'. Both Salford Royal and Royal Oldham hospitals have been confirmed to contain RAAC in their roofing.
Nadine Armitage, director of capital, estates and facilities at the NCA said: "The planks in both Royal Oldham main building and Salford Royal Turnburg building have been inspected as part of a national requirement for all NHS Trusts to monitor and identify any issues and will be continually reviewed in line with national guidance from The Institution of Structural Engineers.
