Eurosceptic Tory MPs have said a secret cross-party summit discussing the failings of Brexit is an attempt to 'manipulate' ongoing negotiations
Mr Smith, Conservative MP for Crawley, was dismayed by the summit and said it was another attempt to weaken the Brexit deal.
“The political establishment never gives up, having tried for years to block people’s vote to leave the EU, then squandered opportunities to realise the freedoms it provided, now they seek to use economic difficulties caused by Covid and Putin’s invasion of Ukraine to weaken and reverse Brexit,” he toldThe role of Mr Gove, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, remained unclear last night.
. But sources close the the Cabinet minister insisted he was just there in his capacity as governor of Ditchley Park and made clear he has no regrets about the UK’s departure from the EU. Former Conservative Party leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith, a prominent supporter of the Vote Leave campaign, toldof his concerns that efforts were being made to water down Brexit, though he was confident they would fail.
“It is a classic Mandlesonian attempt to manipulate the process which will come to nothing at the end of it all,” he said.
