Vogue’s sustainability editor Emily Chan weighs in on the latest heatwave.

Experts say that only a small percentage of these deaths were due to heatstroke, with those already suffering from pre-existing health conditions most at risk. Meanwhile, raging wildfires have caused thousands to be evacuated from their homes in Greece and the Canary Islands.
While temperatures in the UK have stayed relatively mild this month , the Charon heatwave – named after the ferryman of the dead in the Greek underworld Hades – has left many wondering whether they should go ahead with their summer holidays on the continent during peak holiday season.
Despite the understandable concern, there is a morbid irony in the conversations about the fate of our summer vacations in Europe. There have been suggestions that people will now travel to the Mediterranean in the spring or autumn, or opt for cooler destinations instead. Frankly, these discussions are somewhat of a distraction from the real issue: the urgent need to tackle the climate crisis.
