Perhaps to a local the town of Saanen and the others like it dotted throughout the valleys are just ordinary. But to me, and the group of American tourists I have befriended on the journey from Lake Geneva, it is idyllic.
He’s not wrong. The Swiss trains that I ride have high windows that are built to make the most of the views. And recent upgrades mean that even the regular carriages far exceed British trains for comfort. While the railway routes cover much of the valley floor, you can access areas higher up the mountainsides via buses that tackle steep climbs. I see few people, aside from an intrepid caravan driver and local farmers in 4x4s and tractors, as I venture into these small communities, such as Lauenensee and Abländschen.For locals, the expanded bus network is a potential lifeline.
