The “interprofessional” strikes, mainly in the public sector disrupted regional and long-distance train services, many of which were cancelled, while France’s nuclear power plants slashed their electricity output, and there was also some disruption to schools, postal services and hospitals. European Union leaders meeting on Thursday for a summit in Brussels are discussing a range of measures to tame fuel costs, notably through measures to subsidise energy bills for households and businesses – and Mr Macron’s government has already spent nearly €100bn over the past year in France.
