Jeremy Hunt’s action plan to cut greenhouse gases has been criticised as “too little too late” by environmental campaigners, who accused him of failing to upgrade Britain’s housing stock fast enough and deterring investment in green energy

“This must end: the opportunity of a properly co-ordinated energy efficiency programme can boost jobs, skills and growth in local economies and get us on the path to net zero,” he said.

Meanwhile the Government also upped the windfall tax on oil giants such as Shell and BP who drill in the North Sea from 25 per cent to 35 per cent. “Unlike in oil and gas, under this levy, companies which are making significant investments in renewables will get no tax relief and will be hit by a higher windfall rate.”

However, despite Mr Hunt telling MPs about “a major acceleration of home-grown technologies like offshore wind [and] carbon capture and storage”, no further details were given – suggesting he was talking about action already taken rather than any new initiatives. He made no mention of plans for onshore wind and solar power, which are regarded by many as key to achieving net zero.
