Emma Raducanu has had a whirlwind year since she became the first woman since Virginia Wade to win the US Open. Now, she can add her MBE, awarded to her by King Charles III on 29 November, to that list.
Raducanu’s fairytale rise through the tennis ranks first caught the attention of the royal family last autumn, with the Duchess of Cambridge tweeting her support ahead of the US Open final. Queen Elizabeth II also later wrote a letter to the young tennis star to congratulate her on her victory.
“My strongest memory of the Queen will always be the moment, right after the US Open final, when I was read a letter she had written to me by the ambassador in New York,” Raducanu toldfollowing Her Majesty’s death in September. “It was amazing to know that she had been watching my matches and supporting me. That was a very special moment and will live with me forever.”
