Making small but mighty adjustments to your lifestyle could help you live for an extra 20 years. Unsurprisingly, the top three factors are things to avoid - being physically inactive, opioid addiction, and smoking.

It’s long been known that lifestyle can affect lifespan and now a new study has isolated the eight factors that have the biggest impact. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the top three factors are things to avoid – being physically inactive, opioid addiction and smoking.

It found low physical activity, opioid use and smoking were associated with around a 30 to 45 per cent higher risk of death. Meanwhile, stress, binge drinking, poor diet, and poor sleep were each associated with around a 20 per cent increase – with lack of positive social relationships decreasing life expectancy by five per cent.
