The Department for Work and Pensions is urging people to check if they are eligible for Pension Credit, as there are just nine days left to claim.
Successful Pension Credit claims can be backdated for up to three months, provided that the applicant was also eligible to receive the benefit at that time. But it is not just the Pension Credit award itself that could benefit claimants, as even a small Pension Credit award could unlock several other benefits. These include help with housing costs, council tax or heating bills.
Pension Credit is designed to help people who are over State Pension age and on a low income. The payments assist with daily living costs, though you do not need to be in receipt of State Pension to receive it. Currently, around 1.4 million pensioners in Britain receive Pension Credit. However, many are still not claiming this extra financial help.
