The DWP has said a State Pension in line with the National Living Wage is 'not appropriate'

The Department for Work and Pensions has responded to a petition that has called for a £16,900 State Pension.

It states that this would be £16,919.99 after tax and National Insurance deductions, Birmingham Live reports. In response, the DWP has said that it would be inappropriate to have the State Pension in line with the National Living Wage as the two have "different purposes."The DWP said: "The NLW aims to protect low-income workers and provide an incentive to work by ensuring that workers benefit from being employed.

It adds: "The National Living Wage for someone age 23 or over equates to £16,919.99 /year after tax and NI is deducted. The new state pension is: £9,627.80 a year. his is a shortfall to the pensioner of: £7,292. Surely, a 'living' pension should, at the very least, be equal to full-time work on the minimum wage.
