Driver fails breath test after running away from crashed BMW following Glasgow road racing
A driver who was racing other vehicles in a Glasgow street tried to escape police when they attempted to intercept him, according to officers at the scene. The driver of the black BMW sped away from them but then crashed the vehicle, causing extensive damage, before jumping out and attempting to flee on foot.
Police from the Greater Glasgow Divisional Violence Reduction Unit gave chase and quickly caught the man and held him. The 29-year-old was given a breath test, which police say he failed, and he was arrested. Glasgow North West Police say that he will be reported for traffic offences. Glasgow North West Police said in a tweet: "The driver of this BMW was spotted racing other vehicles by DVRU officers last night. He failed to stop for officers before crashing and running off. The male driver, aged 29, was caught and failed a breath test. Arrested and will be reported for traffic offences. #GGDVRU #Fatal5."In a separate incident less than two months ago, shock video footage showed cars racing as they undercut traffic on a busy Glasgow road.
The “fatal five" offences are careless driving, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, excessive speed and distracted driving, including mobile phone use. Police say that road users who commit any of these offences are far more likely to be involved in a fatal collision than those who do not.
"Fatal collisions are heart-breaking – for the family, for the community, and for the responding emergency services staff who have to witness the tragedy and subsequent aftermath. Stopping any more deaths from occurring as a result of something unnecessary and totally avoidable is a top priority for us," say the UK's police forces.
