They were even close to a 24-hour service station
Officers arrested a suspected drug driver after they stopped by the side of the M62 to 'relieve themselves'. North West Motorway Police tweeted about the incident in the early hours of this morning along with a photo from the scene.
Remarkably, it shows the driver stopped to 'relieve themselves' in an emergency bay despite being close to a 24-hour service station, with a sign for the nearby Birch Services visible just a few yards further along the road. The driver had stopped between junctions 18 at Simister Island and 19 at Heywood and Middleton.
The photo shows the driver's Volkswagen Golf was also not fully parked inside the emergency bay, with the right-hand side of the car appearing dangerously close to the motorway's inside lane. Police stopped to check what was going on after seeing the Golf pulled up.Officers tested the driver for drugs, and they produced a positive sample for cannabis, police say. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
A spokesperson for North West Motorway Police tweeted: "A GMP Motorway patrol spotted the driver of this vehicle stopped in an Emergency Refuge Bay on M62 J18 to 19 so they could relieve themselves. Driver tested positive for cannabis and was arrested S5a of Road Traffic Act."
