👉 A long-awaited report into the US Capitol riots has been published, and the conclusions are damning of former US president, Donald Trump

Trump has announced to run for president again in 2024 “President Trump or his inner circle engaged in at least 200 apparent acts of public or private outreach, pressure, or condemnation, targeting either State legislators or State or local election administrators, to overturn State election results,” the committee found.

These included 68 attempts at coercion of state or local officials through direct communication, multiple public statements, and 125 social media posts targeting officials. Mr Trump allegedly focused on officials in Republican-held legislatures of states that had voted for Joe Biden. The committee identified a single tweet from Mr Trump on 19 December, 2020 as the spur for the violence that occurred: “Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!”

“For many extremists and conspiracy theorists, the President’s announcement was a call to arms,” the report states, claiming a catalytic effect for extremist groups such as theThe committee further holds Mr Trump accountable for making no attempt to discourage his supporters once the riot was under way.

An adviser to the Trump campaign, Jason Miller, told the committee that he told the president “several times” that there was insufficient evidence to try to overturn election results. But Mr Trump instead leaned on advisers who “were not scrupulous with the facts and were willing to be dishonest”, the committee found, naming former New York mayor, Rudy Giuliani, who led Mr Trump’s legal team in its efforts to change the election outcome.
