One in 16 people in the UK suffer from diabetes - the majority with type 2.
Drinking a certain type of hot beverage every day can reduce the risk of developing diabetes by over a quarter, a new study has found.
The research was carried out by scientists from the University of Adelaide in Australia and Southeast University in China, and reported in the journal Diabetologia. “Our findings hint at the protective effects of habitual tea drinking on blood sugar management via increased glucose excretion in urine, improved insulin resistance and thus better control of blood sugar. These benefits were most pronounced among daily dark tea drinkers.”
Participants included both non-frequent tea drinkers and those with a history of drinking only a single type of tea. During the study, they were asked about how often they drank tea, and which type.
