Both were painted in about 1767 to 1770 by Wright, born in the city in 1734 and widely regarded as one of the most compelling British painters of the age.They are entitled A Girl Reading A Letter With An Old Man Reading Over Her Shoulder, and Two Boys Fighting Over A Bladder.
"Together they give us our clearest glimpse yet of some of Wright's sources of inspiration: in this case Netherlandish paintings of the 17th Century."
