A leading dentist is urging travellers to be wary of the risks flying can have on teeth. High altitudes, changes in air pressure and a drier atmosphere are just some of the factors that could affect teeth and gums – especially in the dentally vulnerable with pre-existing issues.
Dr Mahmood says air pressure changes can sometimes cause discomfort in the teeth and gums. “As an aeroplane ascends or descends, the air pressure inside the cabin fluctuates and this pressure can cause an unpleasant sensation in the teeth and gums, it can also affect the sinuses as well as the ears,” explained Dr Mahmood.
“This pressure difference can sometimes lead to stress on dental structures, causing pain or discomfort.” “Sometimes dental problems can be linked to sinus issues. Changes in air pressure during flights can aggravate existing sinus conditions, leading to referred pain in the upper teeth or even worsening dental infections if they are connected to the sinus cavities. Jaw discomfort is another issue flyers can experience if they suffer with a condition called Temporomandibular Joint Discomfort .
