Waiting times for surgery increase as the Scottish Government is accused of moving the goalposts to massage the figures

Scotland's dental crisis has sparked a trebling of calls to NHS 24 about toothache and other oral problems.

In Grampian, people could expect to wait 22 weeks in 2019 but are now expected to wait almost a year, with the average at 51 weeks. And the number of dental claims – payment requests to the Scottish Government for treatment carried out by dentists – fell by 850,000 in the first half of this year compared to 2019.

Top news stories today The government has now decided to move the standard six-monthly NHS check-up to 12-24 months. “It is vital every effort is made to incentivise dental practices to take on more NHS patients – the agreement in place is simply not good enough. People need a functioning dental service that is accessible to all.”

Almost half of those registered have not seen an NHS dentist in the past two years, 1.2million have not had an examination or treatment in five years and more than 10 per cent haven’t seen an NHS dentist for over a decade.
