More olive oil a day could reduce dementia risks

In the first study of its kind which examined 90,000 Americans, academics at the American Society for Nutrition set out to investigate the relationship between diet and dementia-related death.

Scientists say their findings offer hope that eating a healthy diet, which incorporates natural olive oil over manufactured fats like margarine or vegetable oil, can help slow the progression of devastating symptoms seen in the incurable disease. According to the government, over 90,000 Scots are living with dementia with 3,000 under the age of 65. Olive oil is rich in healthy monosaturated fats which can also help lower bad LDL cholesterol.

Research suggests that people who regularly use olive oil instead of processed or animal fats tend to have healthier diets overall. But Tessier said the link between olive oil and dementia mortality risk in this study was independent of overall diet quality, suggesting that it has properties that are uniquely beneficial for brain health.
