Dean Henderson is finally leaving Man Utd this summer, to join Crystal Palace after spending over a decade at Old Trafford.
Dean Henderson said he only ever wanted to play for two clubs when he was growing up: Carlisle and Manchester United. Henderson swapped Brunton Park for Old Trafford when he was just 14 years old and nine years later, he was handed his United debut by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer against Luton in September 2020 with an appearance in the League Cup.
United's coaches were excited about Henderson's progression and Solskjaer welcomed him into the squad in 2020/21, but there was a battle about to emerge between himself and David de Gea which wasn't going to be healthy. "It's a save he should have made last week," Solskjaer said. "Very similar. Very pleased for him, of course. Great save."
After that game, Henderson started in the Premier League and that was considered as confirmation he was the first-choice stopper. The Europa League final against Villarreal was also approaching and it was a chance to make that decision official. De Gea started that game instead and never looked back, leaving Henderson stuck on the bench and feeling aggrieved. He was limited to just five appearances and he contemplated his long-term future away from United for the first time.
"I told the hierarchy that I need to be playing football, I don't want to be here and play second fiddle, it was planned out. I was almost gone before the manager came through the door. I have not spoken to him since."
