David Beckham walked out to rapturous applause at The Earthshot Prize, but viewers at home didn’t feel the same, bringing up his controversial ambassadorship with Qatar for the World Cup.
The Earthshot Prize is awarded to five winners each year for their contributions to environmentalism, andas ‘one of the greatest players to have ever graced a football pitch’ and a ‘dedicated Unicef ambassador’.
‘Good evening, everyone. I was honoured to be asked by Prince William to be part of this year’s Earthshot Prize,’ the 47-year-old began.The former footballer gave a speech about using less waste ‘We create beauty in art, music, film, and of course, sport. We create things that bring us comfort in this challenging world,’ he continued in his speech.
Beckham proceeded to praise the ‘incredible’ work of the finalists, before announcing Notpla as the winner. Blasting him, they tweeted: ‘David Beckham should be nowhere near this, he is literally the ambassador for the World Cup with the biggest ever carbon footprint, absolute hypocrite’.
